Summer Programs from West Side Family Place

Chat with Eva

We know that this is an incredibly stressful time for parents and having someone to talk to can make a big difference.  We’ve launched “Chat with Eva” where Eva will be available to speak to parents and caregivers on:

*Mondays – 1:30pm to 2:15pm and 2:15pm to 3:00pm *Tuesdays 7:00pm to 7:45pm and 7:45pm to 8:30pm.

Outdoor Play Drop in

Come join us for a small-group Drop-In at WSFP. Every Tuesdays and Thursdays, we will have two play sessions, 9:30 am to 10:30 am and 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. There is a maximum of 5 families per session.

In order to serve as many people as possible, families will be limited to one visit per week. The program will be held outdoors, rain or shine, and will consist of 45 minutes of play followed by Circle Time. Families are encouraged to bring their own sand toys. The upstairs washroom will be available, but the kitchen and playroom will remain closed.

Physical distancing will be practiced and masks are recommended for adults.

Registration will begin on Monday by calling 604-738-2819 at 8:30am for all sessions that week. Registration  by phone will continue throughout the week from 9:00am to 12:00pm until all sessions are full. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram for regular updates about program availability. Registration made through voicemail or email will not be taken.

Kits in the Park 

Kits in the Park is a partnership between West Side Family Place (WSFP) and Kits House (KNH) to provide a daily, outdoor family drop-in for parents/caregivers and preschool-aged children.

We will be at Arbutus Greenway Park (2205 W 11th Ave) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and Carnarvon Park (2995 W 19th Ave) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Playtime will be from 10 am to 11 am.

There is a maximum of five families per session. For the safety of families and staff members and to serve as many groups as possible, we are limiting the numbers per day and asking families to attend only once per week.

Mama Papa Goose Drop in for Babies  (0-12 months)

Please join us Wednesday mornings at West Side Family Place 10:30 am until noon. Come meet other parents of young babies, chat with Eva and sing some songs!

There is a maximum of 10 families per session. Babies with older siblings are welcome to join one of the Tuesday or Thursday sessions. The upstairs washroom will be available, but the kitchen and playroom will remain closed.

Summertime Baby Popup at the Park

Have you just had a baby and wonder how to connect with other new families during this time of physical distancing?
West Side Family Place has received funding through the Special Response Fund to provide an outreach program for parents with new babies. If you or anybody you know on the West Side has a new little one and would like to connect with other parents in your area, or learn more about supports available in the area, click here, or contact Shahira at wsfp_outreach1@telus.net or 236-888-8496.
This program will be on Tuesdays at Cranberry Park and Thursdays at Tatlow Park at 1:00 to 2:30pm.
 

Kinder Ready, Parent Ready 

For parents with children starting Kindergarten this Fall.

How will you prepare your child for kindergarten this September?

West Side Family Place will be offering a series of Kinder Ready and Parent Ready webinars throughout the Summer on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon.

This program is for parents, new to kindergarten and the school system. We have invited professionals and parents to share their experience, wisdom and expertise. The speakers will talk about ways to support soon-to-be kindergarten children at home, and provide strategies and resources that will help parents support their children during the transition to school.

Live Circle Time!

Join us for this group session where we can connect more closely with children and their families through songs, stories and movement. *Spots for 11 families maximum*

Toy Lending Library

Every Wednesday during the Summer, Toy Lending will be available by appointment by emailing wsfp_info@telus.net, Wednesdays, 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. 

We will have our table set up under our stroller parking outside. There will be a curated selection of toys from our regular catalog of which families can choose from.

Toy Lending Library rules for the safety of our users and staff:

*You must be a West Side Family Place member – new families are welcome to sign up in person (membership fee applies)

*1 toy can be borrowed at one time for up to two weeks. If you need to extend, please let us know.

*Toys must be returned with all parts and pieces included as per picture and/or catalog description

*Please wash and sanitize the toy prior to returning. Family Place will also re-wash and sanitize before the next lend to ensure everyone’s safety

*If you or your child are feeling any symptoms of a cold, cough, fever or flu, please reconsider borrowing until 2 weeks after onset of symptoms

Art Packages

Visit Family Place for a grab bag of open-ended and themed materials for arts and crafts to make at home! Wednesdays, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Mama Papa Goose Online Program 

Looking for a fun group experience for yourself and your baby? Looking for other parents to connect with?

This Mama Papa Goose program is a virtual group experience for parents with their babies focusing on the pleasure and power of using rhymes and songs. The pace is slow and relaxed with plenty of time to connect with other parents for casual discussion of issues and questions that arise. This is a nationally recognized Early Literacy Program.

Staying Sane at Home with Kids Webinar

From our child’s tantrums, resistance, playtime, to their questions of “what are we going to do today,” staying at home with kids has never been so ‘interesting.’ Dr. MacNamara discusses the new realities of caring for our kids and how to help them with their emotions, while trying to preserve ours at the same time. There is a 20 minute slide presentation and an hour of Q and A.
