West Side Family Place made big moves in 1990 when it successfully bought a cozy house for its new location. The WSFP team was concerned about rising rental rates and had the idea of buying a family home to become a more permanent fixture in the community. The team went into a furious state of fundraising; gathering funds from grants, donors, and events, and securing a mortgage for the rest. Of course, house prices were more affordable back in those days! WSFP called upon ex-playroom coordinator, Alix Segal, to act as the realtor knowing that her extensive knowledge of how the program functioned would be a huge benefit. The team wanted a central location off the high street, and more outdoor space was a must. Alix found the house and knew the corner lot would provide enough space for a playground and would be value for money being on the intersection. But first, they had to convince the neighbours.  Jeanine Rutgers, Executive Director: “They thought we were a halfway house! Before we got the license to run the program, we had a lot of meetings with local residents to explain our intentions. Luckily they agreed.” We’re pleased they did since we know the house has served as a second home for many families. Our logos have been inspired by the image of the cozy, fun house ever since. While we have a magnificent house that we are very proud of, WSFP still depends on the financial assistance of our community to stay in operation. Please consider becoming a monthly donor so that we can maintain our high standards and support even more families. Sign up easily here: https://www.canadahelps.org/…/west-side-family…/…
