During the 1990s, Family Places across Vancouver saw an increase in the number of refugee families in the community. Jean Woodcock and Mary Johnston, past Executive Directors, recall social workers bringing groups of young families to their facilities to help them settle into their new neighbourhoods. Many Tamil Sri Lankan families, as well as families from the Balkans, immigrated to Vancouver during those years and found their community at Family Place. Family Places in Vancouver, like West Side Family Place, take great pride in welcoming newcomers, helping them to make friends and get connected to local services. If you meet someone with a young child who is new to the neighbourhood, please pass on our details!
