Indigenous Day

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Now more than ever, West Side Family Place as an organization focused on children and families, we emphasize that Every Child Matters.

West Side Family Place staff and board members continue to join with the people, communities, and organizations expressing their outrage and heartbreak following the discovery of the remains of 215 children at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. We grieve and mourn alongside the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and all Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

We recognize the legacy of harm caused by the residential school system through intergenerational trauma and the ongoing racism and systemic inequities that continue to impact Indigenous Peoples and communities.

All Canadians have a duty to actively participate in truth and reconciliation. WSFP commits to doing the following as we strive to decolonize our work:

-To ensure staff and board members take part in ongoing professional development related to Indigenous cultural safety, inclusive and trauma-informed practice.

-To connect and support Indigenous-led programming and approaches to family engagement.

-To commit in developing our programs emerging from the BC Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care Framework while also connecting our practice with our learnings from Indigenous Elders, speakers and organizations such as BC Aboriginal Child Care Society.

-To continue our work on an Equity and Inclusion Framework to assess and guide our policies, procedures, services and programs.

-To revisit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (http://trc.ca/assets/pdf/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf) and to identify those specifically relevant to the services and programs provided at WSFP.

We welcome feedback, suggestions, conversations on these actions.

We will have storybooks and resources available during our in-person programming and welcome families to share with us in this continued learning. Please also follow our stories for more virtual resources for activities for the day and the days to come.

West Side Family Place recognize and acknowledge that we are honouring, learning, playing, and living as a community on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
