As was the case 50 years ago, when Ellen Leslie and Mary Lynn Burke recognized the loneliness of mothers, Laurel Hart (Ph.D.), a local mother, educator, researcher, and community organizer, recognized that nowadays parents of young children often deal with anxiety and even grief when it comes to the issue of climate change.
Laurel and another mom approached Executive Director Diane Elliot-Buckley and found support for their parent community group. Diane emphasized Family Place’s commitment to caring for children’s futures and supporting parents as they navigate the challenges of their time
With support from Family Place, Simon Fraser University, and city grants, Laurel developed the “First Steps to a Healthy Climate” program and trialled it at West Side Family Place. This initiative, focusing on sustainable living themes, offers practical solutions for various levels of interest. Beyond families, it provides staff with professional development opportunities and aims to expand to all five Family Places in time. As West Side Family Place marks its 50-year milestone, “First Steps to a Healthy Climate” showcases the community’s commitment to a more sustainable and connected future. Cheers to the next 50 years of positive impact!
